How To Make Sure You Have A Happy New Year
Does the mere mention of the Holidays have you shrieking like a wounded jungle animal? Or do you purr like a sweet, happy, warm, contented kitten full of pleasant expectation?
Is the glass half full, or is it half empty—”Please let it not be Holiday time already.” Or, “Wonderfuuuulll, the holidays are here again!”
For those that rate the Holidays right up there with being hung by their fingernails, this time of year is misery, followed by a great sigh of relief, “Boy am I glad that’s over.”
For those that have visions of sugarplums dancing in their head, this time of year is the happiest, most delightful time of the year.
What makes the difference? It’s pretty easy to see, isn’t it? It’s all in your point of view. Those who expect misery will be rewarded handsomely with even more misery, and those that expect an overflowing of happiness will get even more happiness than they expect.
It’s not the Holidays, it’s your attitude toward the Holidays that makes the difference.
For those that have all that pessimism, they could do well to dive into that pessimism and find out what it’s all about. It’s agflap, of course. Some people are holding in mind stress. Maybe stress about not having enough money to buy all the gifts they want to to buy. Maybe they dread the rushing, the pushing and shoving. For some, it’s loneliness that they fear. Being alone for the Holidays. No one to love them.
Many are caught in memories of past happiness, nostalgia, about feelings they’re sure they can never have again. They long for times past when the whole world seemed to fall in love—but it’s not happening for them anymore.
What about those that expect the best Holidays ever? They just can’t wait for all the hoopla to start, all the happy times they know are ahead. They’re brimming with enthusiasm for the Holidays.
I know you see where I’m going with this. Those that hold in mind misery, get misery. Those that hold in mind happiness get happiness, good times and all that goes along with it.
It’s simple. But it doesn’t always seem easy to switch to happy when you’re accustomed to unhappy. If it doesn’t seem easy for you, maybe you’re holding in mind it’s hard. A good starting place is to let go of holding in mind it’s hard, and hold in mind it’s easy. It’s easy to switch to thoughts and feelings of happiness.
That chatterbox mind/ego might be rattling away all the “can’t do’s,” all the reasons the Holidays don’t work for you. That ego isn’t your friend. Why listen to that noise? You can decide not to listen to that boom box in your head. It’s just a habit we got into a long time ago thinking we had to listen to that mental blabbing.
Key word: habit.
In order to have something different, we have to do something different.
Switch the misery thinking to, “I can do it,” thinking. I can have a Happy Holiday Season. Yes, I can. Feels better already doesn’t it?
The most pessimistic among us could be saying, “Pretending isn’t going to change the way I feel.” Hey now, you’re perfectly free to keep the misery. That’s up to you. But, if you want to have something different, you can let go of wanting to have a stressed out, miserable, lonely, lacking Holiday Season. You can do it. Let it go.
Pretending good, happy, lovely, and overflowing with plenty, is definitely better than the alternative, wouldn’t you agree?
You’re pretending all that negativity anyway. You’re making it up. It’s just as easy to pretend something good, which actually makes you feel a lot better—fake it ’til you make it. If you really want to. Many of us really do like our misery. We hold onto it tight like a teddy bear except it makes us feel very nervous and insecure.
So, it’s just a decision.
Make a decision to hold in mind what you want.
All we knew to do was to get crazy, lemming-like, along with the rest of the crazies.
Now we know how to release. And we know we can just let go of anything, any thought or feeling—sadness, disappointment, guilt, disapproval for example. We can let go of any thought or feeling that’s in the direction of any negativity. We can let it go right on the spot.
So, how do we get to the place where all of our days, not just our Holidays, are full of peace, contentment, abundance and ongoing joy? We do it by releasing all the time. We do it by developing momentum.
Let’s dive into the word “momentum.” When I dive in, I see a giant, powerful locomotive zooming down the track and there isn’t anything that can stop it. I see that you get momentum by action, by charging ahead, by going for it 100%. How about you? What do you see?
In years past, I started the New Year in a not so happy mood. After all, the Holidays were over. What is there to look forward to now, except the bills from all that over spending and over splurging? Frankly, it was a bleak downer when January 2 rolled around. In fact, the gloom actually set in late in the day January 1. What a way to start a Happy New Year.
