Who Said You Have to Listen to That Ego?
Who told you that you have to listen to your Ego/mind—that voice playing in your head 24/7? Somewhere along the line you got the impression you had to listen to your mind/ego. You got the impression you had to believe what it’s saying to you. You Got the impression you had to do what it tells you to do. You have to follow its orders.
It’s like the story in Greek Mythology where the mermaids lured the sailors over to the rocks and they crashed on the rocks. That noise, that voice playing in your head is crashing your life, it’s crushing your life. It tells you to do something. You do it, and it tells you that you shouldn’t have done it. Then it tortures you about it. It tells you to beat yourself up. It’s constantly telling you to beat yourself up. It has trained you to beat yourself up over the slightest thing. It gives you the impression that beating yourself up somehow does something for you.
It does something for you. It makes you unhappy, sick, miserable and has you feeling bad and suffering. That’s what that voice playing in your head does for you. Right now it has you doubting the truth of these words. That voice wants you to believe it’s your friend, that it helps you negotiate your way through this life. It gives you the impression that if you don’t listen to it something bad will happen to you.
Please discriminate. That voice is not your friend. Does a friend tell you to harm yourself? Does a true friend try to bring you down? If you look closely that is what your mind/ego does all the time. It tries to bring you down. It wants to make you feel bad. But you are not a victim. You are not a helpless, pathetic victim being victimized by your ego/mind. You decide. You decide to go along with that voice. It tells you to beat yourself up and you decide to beat yourself up.
Maybe you don’t realize that you have a choice. Maybe this is news to you. Maybe you never considered the idea that you don’t have to listen to that noisemaker in your head. Maybe you never realized it’s just a habit to listen to that voice, to take its orders. You do have a choice, moment to moment, to do what that ego/mind is telling you to do. You are not a victim. You decide.
It starts by keeping a watchful eye on that noise. Learn about it. Investigate it. Examine it. See it operating. See it barking orders out to you all the time. See it telling you this and that. See it telling you to get mad at him or her. See it telling you to take some action then criticizing you for doing the very thing it told you to do. These days that noisemaker is saying, “beat yourself up because you lost money in the stock market or pension fund”. And, it’s saying you should have gotten in when the share prices were so low or should have gotten out when the prices went up.
If you watch it closely, you see it has you coming and going. Whatever you do it has you beating yourself up and feeling bad. But you only feel bad because you decided to listen to it and go along with it. Your body aches only because you decided to listen to that ego and beat yourself up. Pain is a doorbell ringing. The pain is saying, let me out. That ego tells you to beat yourself up, to take out a hammer and pound on the pain with negative energy, disapproval.
Your relationships are strained or dysfunctional thanks to you going along with that voice playing in your head. That voice not only tells you to beat yourself up and beat your body up, but it tells you to beat someone else up with words, or attitudes, or actions.
What is stress anyway? It’s worry and fear caused by listening to that voice that tells you that you have to figure your way out of situations. Then the voice tells you to beat yourself up because you don’t have the answer or solution. You do not have to believe what is being said here. You should not believe it. Watch that ego – that mind. Watch what its saying to you, what it has you doing and thinking and saying.
Watch it and you will discover, therein lies the problem and the solution to all your problems. The problem is your decision to listen and go along with that voice in your head. The solution is to decide, no more. Decide not to go along with it anymore. Decide to tell it to take a hike. Decide to tell it to take a walk. Decide to tell it you do not need it anymore.
Have you joined the Change Your Life Teleconference? Have you been to a 7-Day Retreat? Momentum keeps you sharp. It keeps your discriminator sharp. It keeps you awake and alert to what that ego, that mind is saying to you. You should constantly be asking, how does that help me? How does it help me to think that thought, to say those words, to take that action?
Keep up the momentum. That voice in your head won’t like it. That voice in your head will give you all the reasons not to get to a weekend class. That voice in your head—the same one that’s gotten you into whatever predicament you find yourself in—that voice will give you a list a mile long why you shouldn’t sign up for the next 7-Day Retreat.
It’s time for you to decide. Are you going to be run by that voice? Are you going to be dictated to by that noise? Are you going to follow the advice of something that has proven to you that it is not out for your best interests? Are you going to listen to that voice that’s proven it’s out to make you sad, mad, scared, sick and a lot less full of the abundance you deserve? It’s time to decide in favor of yourself.
